The History And Success Of Black Women Filmmakers Of Africa And The African Diaspora

It is indeed a wonderful revelation in the history of world cinema that immensely talented women filmmakers of Africa and the African Diaspora are making it really big in innovative filmmaking. Not only are they challenging old cinematic prescriptions, they are also using their superior art of cinema to create and establish new visions of their people and the world. The journey of black women filmmakers began as early as 1922 when Tressie Saunders, a black woman director made the exemplary film 'A Woman's Error'. It was the first attempt of its kind in that era to decolonize the gaze and to ground the film in the black female subjectivity. However, today even after a long history of evocative work, black women directors have had a long, slow path to the director's chair, where only a handful of black woman filmmakers have been able to break through the racial barriers in Hollywood.

But apart from Hollywood, many of the black women from Africa and in the United States have been able to stand out in respect of world cinema. In fact, filmmakers like Julie Dash (originally from New York City) has long ago won the Best Cinematography Award with her much acclaimed film "Daughters of the Dust" at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival. On the other hand, Cheryl Denye from Liberia has received worldwide fame and accolade with her film The 'Watermelon Woman' (1996), which happens to be the first African American lesbian feature film in the history of world cinema. Another woman filmmaker, Safi Faye from Senegal has to her credit several ethnographic films that brought her international acclaim and earned her several awards at the Berlin International Film Festivals in 1976 and 1979. Besides, there are independent black women filmmakers like Salem Mekuria from Ethiopia who produces documentary films focusing on her native Ethiopia and on African American women in general. In 1989, Euzhan Palcy became the first black woman to direct a mainstream Hollywood film, 'A Dry White Season'. In spite of all this success, it is still true that the state of things isn't all that rosy for African American women filmmakers. A documentary named "Sisters in Cinema' by Yvonne Welbon has tried to explore why and how the history of black women behind the camera has been made strangely obscure in all of Hollywood.

"Sisters in Cinema' happens to be the first and a one-of-its-kind documentary in the history of world cinema that attempts to explore the lives and films of inspirational black women filmmakers. To commemorate the success and the colossal achievement of black women filmmakers throughout the ages, a 62-min documentary by Yvonne Welbon named "Sisters in Cinema" came up in 2003. The film attempted to trace the careers of inspiring African American women filmmakers from the early part of the 20th century to today. As the first documentary of its kind, 'Sisters in Cinema' has been regarded by critics as a strong visual history of the contributions of African American women to the film industry. "Sisters in Cinema", they say, has been a seminal work that pays homage to African American women who made history against all racial, social barriers and odds.

While being interviewed, the filmmaker Yvonne Welbon admitted that when she set out to make this documentary, she had barely knew there were any black women filmmakers apart from the African-American director Julie Dash. However, in pursuit of seeking those inspirational directors, she set out to explore the fringes of Hollywood where she discovered a phenomenal film directed by an African American woman Darnell Martin. Apart from that film 'I Like It Like That', she discovered only a handful of films being produced and distributed by African Americans. Thus saying, the monopoly of Hollywood by white filmmakers, producers and distributors inspired her in a way to travel the path of independent filmmaking. Surprisingly, here she uncovers a wide range of really remarkable films directed by an African American woman outside of the Hollywood studio system and thus she found out her sisters in cinema.

Within the 62-hour documentary, the careers, lives and films of inspirational women filmmakers, like Euzhan Palcy, Julie Dash, Darnell Martin, Dianne Houston, Neema Barnette, Cheryl Dunye, Kasi Lemmons and Maya Angelou are showcased, along with rare, in-depth interviews interwoven with film clips, rare archival footage and photographs and production video of the filmmakers at work. Together these images give voice to African American women directors and serve to illuminate a history of the phenomenal success of black women filmmakers in world cinema that has remained hidden for too long.

In recent times, there has been the Eighth Annual African American Women In Cinema Film Festival in New York City in October 2005. It was another remarkable event that showcased exceptional feature and documentary films as well as short films made by African American women filmmakers like Aurora Sarabia, a fourth generation Chicana (Mexican-American) from Stockton, CA, Vera J. Brooks, a Chicago-based producer, Teri Burnette, a socialistic filmmaker, Stephannia F. Cleaton, an award-winning New York City newspaper journalist and the business editor at the Staten Island Advance, Adetoro Makinde, a first generation Nigerian-American director, screenwriter, producer, actress, among others. And in more recent times, from February 5 to March 5, 2007, there has been the celebration of the Black History Month by the Film Society of Lincoln Center & Separate Cinema Archive, in which the center presented "Black Women Behind the Lens".

A seething documentary, "Black Women Behind the Lens" celebrates the uncompromising cinematic labors of love created by a group of brave African-American women. Gifted with rare determination and undaunted spirits, these black women filmmakers were committed to speaking truth to power while offering alternatives to the stereotypical images of black women found in mainstream media. They resorted to Guerilla filmmaking, an artistic rebellion in the face of the long established network of Hollywood and have challenged old cinematic perceptions, using their art to erect new visions of their people, their heritage and their world. Noted theoreticians, sociologists, women writers, directors are saying that it is good to know that women filmmakers of Africa and the African Diaspora are challenging old cinematic prescriptions and creating their own visions in the cinema they love to make.

However, while a significant number of women in Africa and here in the United States have been able to carve out successful careers in filmmaking, the hurdles are particularly daunting. The problem, says Elizabeth Hadley, the chair of Women Studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., is not particularly about black women making films, but the issues of marketing, distribution and funding. As a result, the majority of these women are finding money independently and working on shoestring budgets. However, all said and done, it is enough encouraging to know that at least some of these women are daring to decolonize the gaze of Hollywood and to ground their films in black female subjectivity. Any attention or recognition that comes when these women desire to communicate their ideas about black people's history, heritage, with an emphasis on women's experience, must be welcome!

Why the Big Muscle Look is Dead in Hollywood

The Leading Man in Hollywood is Now Slim and Toned, Not Bulky!

Remember back in the 80's when Arnold Schwarzenegger was the big action star? He was huge. He basically brought bodybuilding to the mainstream and influenced an entire generation of young guys to want to get as big and muscular as possible. It started with Conan, then the Terminator, Commando, Predator, Twins, and many more action flicks.

The Big Muscle Look Began to Die in the Late 90's.

You see, although many guys wanted to get as big as possible, women had a different idea of what looked great. They wanted their men to look good in dress clothes as well as with their shirts off. Women are physically attracted to the "GQ" look or lean and slim toned guys, not massive freaky muscular guys. If you ever have seen a soap opera, you will notice that all of the men have average amounts of muscle but with exceptional muscle tone.

1999, the Year Fight Club Came Out, Was The Official Death of the Massive Look

For years during the big muscle era, women kept trying to tell guys that they were more interested in muscle definition and not into the bodybuilder look. Guys didn't really listen until 1999, when Fight Club came out. Brad Pitt finally showed the masses of guys out there that being ultra-lean with a normal build is more bad-ass looking than being huge and bulky. Brad's character, Tyler Durden, was able to get a "hip" funky look, but had amazing muscle definition when he took his shirt off. This is a winning combination with the ladies and all actors are striving for this look.

Since the late 90's, Many Hollywood Actors Have Begun to Slim Down

Remember how big The Rock used to be? He is now MUCH lighter and looks great. What about Mark Wahlberg or Ryan Reynolds? Both of these guys have really slimmed down and have the sleek and toned look instead of being bulky. Same with Matt Damon. More recently Will Smith really slimmed down for his role in "I am Legend". He had to get big and bulky for "Ali", but dropped a lot of that mass and really cleaned up his physique for his newest role.

Are You "Still" Trying to Get Massive?

Being big and massive is a great way to impress guys in the gym, but won't get you far with women. There is simply a "cheesiness" factor once you get too big. You can't really achieve a hip look and clothes don't fit well. Ever see a professional football player or professional wrestler in a suit? They look stupid. If you want to be more attractive to the opposite sex, then you may reconsider your goal of getting big muscles. Opt for the lean athletic look instead.

Motörhead - Live Fast Die Old - Pt. 2

Motörhead's Channel 4 Documentary "Live Fast Die Old" "Motörhead are rock's most stubborn survivors. Formed in 1975 by rock legend Lemmy Kilmister, they were once one of Britain's biggest bands. Renowned for being among the heaviest drinking, drug-fuelled womanisers in the business, the band made the 'Guinness Book of Records' as the loudest band ever. In the early eighties they blasted their way to the top of the charts with 'Ace of Spades'. Almost thirty years on, 'Motörhead: Live Fast, Die Old' follows behind the scenes as Lemmy and his band set off on their next UK tour. Lemmy is now 57. He still drinks a bottle of bourbon a day and shows little sign of slowing down. But how and why does he keep going? From Lemmy's West Hollywood apartment, crammed with Nazi memorabilia, knives and gothic skulls to Norwich Student Union, Portsmouth Guildhall and the after gig parties in Newcastle, Manchester and Wolverhampton the band are booked to play eleven towns in 13 days, living and sleeping on the same bus. Playing the same music, wearing the same clothes and still as controversial as they've always been, can a band really survive without changing?"

7 Simple Steps To Lose Extra Weight And Tone Up For Your Summer

Summer is here and we are already half-way through the year!

As the weather starts to get warmer, we start to ditch our warm clothings and prepare for our summer vacations. We love to spend time with our family or friends at the beach, and we become more conscious about our own body shapes.

If you have been putting off starting your weight loss plan, this is a great time to start seriously.

But the truth is that it is not easy for women over 40 to lose weight within a short period of time. It will take a lot of hard work and consistent effort if you want to achieve the weight loss you desire.

Eating right, making smart food choices, and working out regularly are the keys to the body almost everyone will envy. Having said that, it's never too late to improve your body and your look for your bathing suit, bikini, or tankini.

Start your beach body "boot camp" today!

Here is a simple 7-step plan for you to lose some pounds and tone up for your summer...

1. Write it all down on a journal.

It is always a good idea to write down accurately what you eat and drink everyday including your occasion snacks (e.g. a chocolate cookie). Also, you must jot down what kind of exercise you do every day. From there, you can learn about your own eating and exercise behaviour. You will be able to zoom in your weak points which you can make improvements on.

2. Learn to read the food labels.

This is a very important habit you must adopt. Do not be deceived by words such as "Low Fat" or "Less Sugar". The products may have reduced its fat or sugar content from the original products, but you must still do a proper comparison with other similar products to find the right kind of food for yourself. Remember to study every label before you purchase anything that will end up going into your body.

3. Drink more water & cut down on other beverages.

It is very important that we drink 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. You will need drink even more when you are doing your exercise. In case you didn't know, this can help your metabolism also. Try to cut down on your fruit juices. Instead, it's better to eat the whole fruit because it will give you the fiber and vitamins your body needs and less calories as compared to a glass of fruit juice. If possible, try to limit your alchol intake, especially high caloric alcoholic beverages.

4. Eat all your meals.

Do not skip any meals. Many women tend to skip their meals, especially their breakfast. Do not do this. You must eat breakfast everyday. Because so many hours have passed since last night's dinner, your breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Choose a breakfast with complex carbs and fruits to kick start your day. You can have a small snack before your lunch and your dinner. As for your dinner, it is a good idea to reduce the portion size and have more vegetables for easy digestion. Remember, do not starve yourself as this will backfire on you, and make it more difficult to lose the weight in the future.

5. Exercise.

A good old advice. Exercise is one of the keys to lose weight regardless what kind of diet you are on. A 30-minute routine of aerobic exercises such as brisk walking, jogging or swimming every day can help to burn more fat in your body. Even doing housework can be treated as a form of exercise. Remember, you must keep your body moving if you want to burn those fats.

6. Increase your metabolism

The key to increase your metabolism is really to build muscles. Muscles are like a furnace that increases your metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories even when you are at rest. Thus, muscles are very important and essential for your fat loss. You can do weight resistance training 2 to 3 times every week. Furthermore, you will also look better with a toned-up body when you are in your swimming suit or bikini... just like the Hollywood stars.

7. Sleep.

Many people tend to ignore the importance of sleep. In fact, if you have sufficient 8 hours of good sleep, you will not only feel refreshed and recharged, but you will find yourself losing some weight. Recent scientific research has shown that people with insufficient sleep tend to have difficulty to lose weight and tend to get other health problems too.

It may seem quite easy but without a proper plan and successful strategies, you won't succeed in achieving your weight loss goals. You really need to have patience as results do not happen overnight. The most important thing is that you must not GIVE UP even when you hit a temporary setback.

Guitar Chords For Country Songs

If you have just started playing guitar you probably want to
know what are the guitar chords for country songs, how many
chords should I learn, what happens if the chord shapes are
difficult to play.

Acoustic guitars are great to take with you anywhere and are
ideally suited to playing country songs. The guitar chords you
use for country songs will depend on whether it's a two chord or
three chord song.

The best guitar-friendly keys for your country songs are: G, D, A
and E.

Two chord songs.

Guitar chords for country songs in keys G, D, A, and E.

Key of G = G and D7

Key of D = D and A7

Key of A = A and E7

Key of E = E and B7

Here is a short list of some country tunes using two chords.

Jambalaya

Tulsa Time

Achey Breaky Heart

Deep In The Heart Of Texas

Country artists don't sing songs, they tell stories.

Country songs are about real life--memories and reactions to
real things that happen to everyone. It's about the story the
singer is telling it has nothing to do with how many chords a
song has, remember that many successful song have only three
chords.

Country music evolved out of the tradition of working cowboys
singing cowhand ballads such as 'Texas Cowboy' around the
campfire or on the range and was later popularized in Hollywood
by singers such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. However, the image
of the cowboy was enshrined in country music by Hank Williams.

Three chord songs.

Guitar chords for country songs in keys G, D, A, and E.

Key of G = G, C and D7

Key of D = D, G and A7

Key of A = A, D and E7

Key of E = E, A and B7

Here is a list of some country tunes using three chords.

Am I That Easy To Forget?

Blue Eyes Cryin' In The Rain

Bonapart's Retreat

Cold Cold Heart

Coward Of The County

Crazy Arms

Folsom Prison Blues

Green, Green Grass Of Home

I Fall To Pieces

Jealous Heart

King Of The Road

Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys

Okie From Muskogee

Please Release Me

Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms

Six Days On The Road

The Gambler

Truck Drivin' Man

Wabash Cannonball

When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again

You Are My Sunshine

And hundreds more ...

Songs like Your Cheatin' Heart, people still like that, it
doesn't matter what year you sing it in or where you came from.

If you find that a song is in the wrong key or the chord shapes
are difficult to play use a capo to make things easy.

Here's what happens when you put a capo on the first fret.

G chord now becomes G#/Ab

C chord now becomes C#/Db

D7 chord now becomes D#7/Eb7

------------------------

D chord now becomes D#/Eb

G chord now becomes G#/Ab

A7 chord now becomes A#7/Bb7

------------------------

A chord now becomes A#/Bb

D chord now becomes D#/Eb

E7 chord now becomes E#7/F7

------------------------

E chord now becomes F

A chord now becomes A#/Bb

B7 chord now becomes C7

When you practice your guitar chords for country songs listen
carefully and you will notice how so many country songs are
strikingly similar. Many great country songs just use G, C, D or
G, D, A or some combination thereof.

Overview of Hollywood Period Films

Historical period films are those that are set in the background of a historical period with some exceptions. There are certain standards that have to be maintained to classify a film as a historical period film. All things including the sets, props, costumes, styling, and characters will have to symbolize the time and background of the event.

Producing Hollywood period films is always considered a very expensive task. The reason for this is that you need to prepare huge grand sets and design costumes that reflect the style of the era in which the film is based.

Many film critics say that whenever Hollywood scriptwriters lack scripts, they go for a period film. But, since most of the period films are a big success, who minds?

Filmmakers believe that making period films is a critical job, since most of the contemporary actors know very little of the time Hollywood period films are based. They have to go through extensive research to get a feel of the characters from epics. Imagining their mannerism and state of mind and to portray it on screen is a tough task for both the actors and directors.

Nose Job From 500 BC To 2008

A nose job is medically termed as rhinoplasty. It is the name given to the surgical procedure normally performed by a plastic surgeon to improve the cosmetic appearance of a person's nose. A nose job is the medical alteration of one's nose look to make it look better.

Sushruta, a Hindu physician, was the one who first introduced and developed the concept of plastic surgery for noses. It was in 500 BC when he attempted to reconstruct the noses of his amputated patients. During that time, noses were removed as punishment for certain crimes.

The procedure surrounding a nose job requires local or general anesthesia, depending upon the extent of the operation. There will be incisions made inside the nose. They can also be made on the skin separating the nostrils. The surgeon would reshape the cartilage and the bone of the nose. Without anesthesia, the patient won't be able to withstand the pain. This is also the reason why nose jobs can only be conducted inside a hospital or a fully equipped clinic.

Today, nose jobs are generally performed for aesthetic purposes. It is very popular in Hollywood, where both the famous and not-so famous actors and actresses take their turns on the surgical table to have their noses done. Of course, the most celebrated nose job to date is still that of Michael Jackson's and his siblings.

When it comes to races, Asians and Africans are the people who normally subject themselves to nose jobs. People belonging to these races tend to have the need to make their nose to look more European or Caucasian. The nose job performed on a person would depend upon the actual structure of his nose. This also indicates that the procedures performed on an Asian are different from that of an African and other races.

A person may undergo several nose jobs throughout his lifetime. In fact, many Hollywood stars today admit to having two to three jobs done on their noses just make it appear perfect. There might be a need to undergo more nose jobs to revise or correct the unsatisfactory outcome of the first one.

However, there are also non-surgical rhinoplasty procedures. A non-surgical nose job is performed by altering the shape of the person's nose through filling in the depressed parts. This doesn't require any invasive surgical procedures at all. It is also the best alternative for people who are afraid to undergo total surgery of their noses.

Here are a few tips for nose job procedures:

1. Go only to certified places that have good reputation and long experience.

2. Get as much information as you can about how to be prepared to the surgery and what to do after.

3. Meet the surgeon before the surgery so he can explain the whole procedure to you and see if you are compatible.

4. Know and be prepared that you won't be able to get back to normal everyday life right after the surgery; you will have to have a recovery period.

5. If your nose bleeds after the surgery, don't lie down on your back, sit down and tilt your head a bit forward, use a towel to saturate the blood. If the bleeding doesn't stop, turn to your doctor.

6. Try not to blow your nose 2-3 weeks after the cast was removed.

7. Don't do any sports at least for first few weeks after the surgery.

8. Try not to be over exposed to the sun for about 3 month.
